Introduction
There is a strong human desire to reproduce one’s kind. This is particularly important in sub-Saharan Africa. In most cultures in Nigeria, a woman is not believed to be “complete” if she is yet to bear a child of her own. Adoption is not particularly common because it is not entirely acceptable as an option for childbearing. The process of adoption also can be complicated, requiring years to conclude. Fostering is one of the more common options, but that innate desire to bear one’s own offspring with some genetic material of either the woman or her male partner remains.
